We are currently searching for a Research Assistant to provide support to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Laboratory Medicine (DLM). This is a short-term engagement for an estimated duration of 10 months, with the potential for extension with client approval. 

What You Will Do:

  • Perform specimen processing of blood, stool, and urine.
  • Work on implementation of high complexity laboratory developed tests requiring a high degree of expertise.
  • Train new staff in processing and NDSR nutrition database entry.
  • Inventory reagents and supplies, ordering and procuring reagents through the Clinical Center purchasing system.
  • Document all quality control activities, instrument calibrations and maintenance preformed.
  • Maintain records of instrument failure, troubleshooting and QC.
  • Collaborate with staff to evaluate new techniques; perform comparative studies with older technology; perform evaluations to determine new guidelines.
  • Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results; correct problem or notify staff; document all corrective actions taken.
  • Follow the laboratory's established policies and procedures when test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
  • Comply with accrediting and inspections agency requirements, participating in activities associated with the laboratory accreditation process.


What You Will Need:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a microbiology research laboratory.
  • Computer skills to include MS Office Suite.
  • Ability to lift 10 - 30 pounds
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination.
  • Strong communications skills, both oral and written.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.


What Would Be Nice To Have:

  • Preferred fields of study: Biological Science, Microbiology, Medical Laboratory Science, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with NDSR nutrition database entry, strongly preferred.
  • Experience with classification of food via the NOVA system, strongly preferred.
  • Experience coordinating study participants in a clinical trial, strongly preferred.

The annual salary range for this position is $49,000.00-$81,000.00. Compensation decisions depend on a wide range of factors, including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, security clearances, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
