What You Will Do:

The Guidehouse Communities Energy and Infrastructure segment is a go-to partner for leaders creating sustainable, resilient communities and infrastructure, serving as trusted advisors to utilities and energy companies, large corporations, investors, NGOs, and the public sector. The North Market Team within the Energy Providers practice works with utility clients across the energy value chain. We assist our clients in three key domains:

  • Customer programs (e.g., energy efficiency, heat electrification, demand response) spanning strategy, design, and evaluation.

  • Modernization of electric and natural gas infrastructure and operations

  • Regulatory strategy, business strategy, program management, and digital transformation efforts

As an Associate Director on the Energy Providers North Market Team, you will serve as a trusted advisor and engagement leader for utility clients, responsible for delivering high-quality outcomes, managing client relationships, leading teams, and driving growth across strategic accounts. You will own the delivery of projects and significant project workstreams and interact regularly with the clients to ensure engagement success. This includes leading day-to-day internal team meetings and coordinating/facilitating meetings with clients and their stakeholders. You will be expected to lead the development of and communicate well-organized, effective reports and presentations to clients. You will lead and contribute to business development activities including opportunity identification, relationship expansion, capture strategy, and proposal development that supports growth across existing and emerging client accounts. You will lead, coach, and mentor others on the team to ensure quality analysis and deliverables. We are looking for someone with a passion for creative problem solving, client service, and project management.

Key responsibilities for this position include:

  • Leading complex client engagements and workstreams, ensuring high-quality delivery, strong client satisfaction, and effective management of scope, schedule, staffing, budget, and risk

  • Managing and mentoring teams responsible for providing detailed fact finding, research, technical and economic analysis, and development of client deliverables across energy-related engagements

  • Owning and expanding client relationships and workstreams by serving as a trusted advisor, identifying emerging client needs, and supporting account growth

  • Developing and presenting research findings and recommended plans of action directly to clients through reports, presentations, workshops, and working sessions

  • Assessing emerging energy efficiency, renewable energy, and utility technologies and evaluating implications for utility strategy, operations, and customer programs

  • Leading or overseeing activities such as building energy modeling, field performance measurement, primary research efforts (e.g., surveys, interviews, focus groups), and customer engagement strategy development, depending on project needs

  • Leading the facilitation of workshops and working sessions between client departments and third-party organizations; review and approve meeting content, drive discussion towards consensus

  • Collaborating across Guidehouse teams, solution areas, and markets to deliver integrated client solutions and support firm growth initiatives

  • Leading and contributing to business development activities, including opportunity identification, capture strategy, proposal development, client presentations, and pursuit execution resulting in new or expanded work

  • Monitoring engagement financial performance, including forecasting, invoicing, and margin management

  • Serving as a People Manager for direct reports, which includes coaching team throughout the year and guiding direct reports through the performance enablement process, among other responsibilities.

What You Will Need:

  • Must be a US Permanent Resident or US Citizen due to the nature of client engagements

  • Bachelor’s degree AND Seven (7+) plus years of relevant industry or consulting experience excluding internships, co-ops, fellowships and academic research

  • Demonstrated experience identifying new business opportunities and successful client sales

  • History of successful team leadership to deliver exceptional client results

  • Tireless attention to detail, demonstrated in all prior experience (academic and professional)

  • Outstanding analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Proficiency with data analytics

  • Ability to assume ownership of significant portions of tasks while collaborating with a close-knit team

  • Strong interest in the energy industry and utility customer programs (e.g., energy efficiency, heat electrification, demand response), grid modernization, utility operational technology and/or information technology, business and regulatory strategy, and/or program management

  • An inquisitive nature and desire for continuous improvement

  • Superior interpersonal skills

  • Ability to collaborate as a part of team, as well as to work independently

  • Ability to manage several tasks simultaneously, prioritize and plan work activities while meeting respective deadlines.

  • Strong budget, task, scope, organizational and management skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to travel as needed

  • Ability to work onsite in a Guidehouse Office or Client Office location

  • This position is open to candidates who will be associated with one of the following offices: Boston, MA; Burlington, MA; New York City, NY; Detroit, MI; Arlington, VA; Chicago, IL

What Would Be Nice To Have:

  • Advanced degree (Master’s, MBA, PhD) in an engineering, business, economics, environmental science and/or related discipline

  • Experience serving as a people manager and/or mentor for junior staff

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification

  • Advanced level proficiency experience with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft PowerPoint

  • Experience creating models within Excel and/or experience with R or other programming languages (e.g. Python)

  • Relevant energy industry, utility, and/or consulting experience, which may include experience with specific Energy Provider account

  • Knowledge and experience in industry topics such as: customer programs (e.g., energy efficiency, heat electrification, demand response), renewable energy, electric transmission and distribution infrastructure, natural gas systems, wholesale electric markets

  • Understanding of business, project, and program management fundamentals

  • Experience developing and delivering presentations to executive audiences

  • Excellent at visualizing data, synthesizing insights, and storytelling with data

  • A history of successful, creative problem-solving

  • Excitement to explore the underlying cause of the observation/result

The annual salary range for this position is $135,000.00-$225,000.00. Compensation decisions depend on a wide range of factors, including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, security clearances, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
