What You Will Do:

  • Provide management of complex and unique imaging equipment located in a biosafety level (BSL)-4 environment, planning of state-of-the-art animal imaging studies, as well as accurate, and timely interpretations and analysis of various types of imaging data.
  • Advise the Federal Task Leader and Integrated Research Facility- Frederick (IRF) staff in identifying, installing, and managing imaging equipment and upgrades, assist in maintaining existing equipment and serving as a subject matter expert for the design and performance of appropriate animal imaging studies.
  • Advise the Federal Task Leader on appropriate imaging modalities to achieve relevant biological endpoints in animal studies using novel, emerging or highly pathogenic viruses.
  • Assist in the design and execution of multiple complex imaging animal studies that use imaging as an endpoint.
  • Advise the Federal Task Leader about imaging equipment and software upgrades to enhance the imaging capabilities of the IRF.
  • Interact with Comparative Medicine and Imaging branches of the IRF to provide expertise in biological endpoints related to animal imaging studies.
  • Coordinator with the Federal Task Leader, IRF Director, Division of Clinical Research Director, and the Director of CIDI (NIH Center for Infectious Disease Imaging) on translation of animal imaging studies to clinical studies.
  • Assist with introducing new collaborative studies for review by the IRF Project Management Group.
  • Assist with submissions of peer reviewed publications, preferably in high impact journals.
  • Write recommendation memos of imaging equipment and software upgrade recommendations.
  • Write plans for design of animal imaging studies.
  • Discuss with the lab staff and the Federal Task Leader of imaging work conducted at the IRF.
  • Prepare email communications of important findings.


What You Will Need:

  • Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering or equivalent degree in a related field.
  • A minimum of fifteen (15) years of related experience.
  • Must be able to work in a BSL-4 setting with select agents and be enrolled in the NIAID-IRF Frederick Biosurety program to include passing and maintaining Tier-III security clearance.
  • Must be able to work both independently and in a team environment.

What Would Be Nice To Have:

  • Previous recent BSL-4 experience preferred.

The annual salary range for this position is $171,000.00-$285,000.00. Compensation decisions depend on a wide range of factors, including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, security clearances, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
