Job Description Summary
The Application Integration Engineer is a hands-on engineer responsible for delivering secure, production-ready integrations across legacy applications, vendor platforms, and AWS-hosted services supporting the GrantSolutions modernization program. Working in partnership with the Solution Architect, the engineer owns the detailed design, implementation, testing, deployment, and operational readiness of APIs, event-driven workflows, messaging integrations, and data exchanges. The role requires practical experience building and operating resilient AWS solutions, modernizing Java and Oracle-based systems incrementally, and collaborating with security, platform, data, product, and vendor teams in a regulated federal environment.
What You Will Do:
We are seeking a mid-level Application Integration Engineer to implement integration capabilities for a large-scale GrantSolutions platform modernization effort. This role will support the Solution Architect and senior technical leads by developing Java/Spring Boot RESTful APIs, configuring AWS cloud-based integration components, supporting data exchange between Java and Python applications, and helping connect modernized vendor-delivered capabilities with existing legacy systems.
The Application Integration Engineer will translate architecture guidance into working technical solutions, with a focus on API development, data integration, interface implementation, cloud-aligned application services, testing, troubleshooting, and deployment support. This individual will work closely with architects, Product Owners, Scrum Masters, application developers, data engineers, vendors, security teams, and Federal stakeholders to ensure integration work aligns with platform standards, interface contracts, release expectations, and modernization objectives.
- Implement application integration capabilities in support of a large-scale platform modernization program delivered through iterative agile execution.
- Develop, configure, test, and support RESTful APIs, service integrations, messaging flows, data transformation logic, orchestration components, and interface services that connect legacy Java-based applications with cloud-native or microservices-based platforms.
- Work under the guidance of the Solution Architect to apply approved architecture patterns, API standards, data integration approaches, security expectations, and implementation guidance.
- Select and implement appropriate integration patterns, including synchronous APIs, asynchronous messaging, event-driven integration, batch processing, and workflow orchestration.
- Implement secure AWS access and connectivity using least-privilege IAM, KMS, Secrets Manager, VPC and private connectivity, resource policies, and secure API exposure patterns.
- Design resilient integrations using retries, timeouts, idempotency, dead-letter queues, back-pressure controls, schema-evolution practices, and failure-recovery mechanisms.
- Establish operational visibility through CloudWatch metrics, centralized logging, alarms, distributed tracing, dashboards, and documented operational runbooks.
- Support production deployment and operations by implementing deployment and rollback strategies, responding to incidents, managing capacity and service quotas, and considering cost implications.
- Implement secure integrations using authentication and authorization technologies such as OAuth2, OpenID Connect (OIDC), SAML, JWT, or similar standards.
- Support event-driven architectures, messaging systems, and asynchronous processing using technologies such as SQS, SNS, EventBridge, Kafka, or similar platforms.
- Develop and support Oracle database and SQL-based integration activities, including query development, data modeling support, troubleshooting, and performance tuning.
- Collaborate with application development, data, security, DevSecOps, and vendor teams to clarify interface requirements, resolve dependencies, and support end-to-end integration testing.
- Document technical implementation details, interface behavior, data mappings, API contracts, configuration notes, test results, and operational support considerations.
- Troubleshoot integration defects, interoperability issues, data quality issues, API errors, authentication or authorization issues, database performance concerns, cloud service issues, and deployment-related problems across distributed applications.
- Support CI/CD, automated testing, code reviews, release readiness activities, production deployment planning, and operational transition for integration components.
- Contribute to continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to simplify integrations, improve reliability, reduce manual effort, and strengthen platform maintainability.
What You Will Need:
- Must be able to OBTAIN and MAINTAIN a Federal or DoD "PUBLIC TRUST"; candidates must obtain approved adjudication of their PUBLIC TRUST prior to onboarding with Guidehouse. Candidates with an ACTIVE PUBLIC TRUST or SUITABILITY are preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Minimum of FOUR (4) to SIX (6) years of experience in software engineering, application integration, API development, data integration, cloud-enabled application delivery, distributed application support, or related technical roles.
- Strong proficiency in Java, Spring Boot, RESTful API development, scalable microservices, service integration patterns, and integrations between legacy Java-based applications and modern cloud-native platforms.
- Experience integrating Java and Python applications using APIs, messaging, data transformation, orchestration, and related interoperability techniques.
- Experience with cloud-native application development using AWS services such as Lambda, ECS/EKS, SQS, SNS, EventBridge, API Gateway, DynamoDB, CloudWatch, and related cloud-based integration, monitoring, deployment, and troubleshooting capabilities.
- Experience implementing secure integrations using OAuth2, OpenID Connect (OIDC), SAML, JWT, or similar authentication and authorization technologies.
- Strong understanding of enterprise integration patterns, API design, event-driven architectures, messaging systems, and asynchronous communication using technologies such as SQS, SNS, EventBridge, Kafka, or similar platforms.
- Solid experience with relational databases such as Oracle, including data modeling, query development, SQL optimization, transactions, troubleshooting, and performance tuning.
- Working knowledge of NoSQL databases such as DynamoDB, MongoDB, Cassandra, or similar modern distributed data stores.
- Ability to design and develop domain models and implement domain-driven design (DDD) principles for complex business applications.
- Experience implementing data integration solutions involving data mapping, transformation, validation, synchronization, migration activities, batch processing, event-driven processing, or canonical data models.
- Experience developing, testing, troubleshooting, and supporting distributed applications across APIs, databases, cloud services, and legacy systems.
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, Git-based source control, DevSecOps practices, SDLC processes, agile delivery, and release management.
- Ability to interpret architecture guidance, interface specifications, API contracts, data mappings, user stories, acceptance criteria, and technical design documentation.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex integration and interoperability issues across applications, APIs, data flows, authentication or authorization mechanisms, databases, cloud services, and deployment environments.
- Strong documentation skills, including the ability to maintain implementation notes, API documentation, interface specifications, data mappings, test evidence, and support handoff materials.
- Ability to work collaboratively with Solution Architects, developers, DevSecOps engineers, data teams, vendors, security teams, Product Owners, Scrum Masters, Federal stakeholders, and business stakeholders in an Agile environment.
- Self-motivated, adaptable, and able to operate effectively in fast-paced, dynamic environments with appropriate guidance from technical leads.
- Experience provisioning AWS resources through infrastructure as code and deploying application changes through automated CI/CD pipelines.
- Ability to troubleshoot integrations across application code, APIs, AWS services, network paths, identity controls, databases, and deployment environments.
What Would Be Nice To Have:
- Experience supporting platform modernization initiatives within enterprise or government environments.
- Experience supporting federal or government IT programs involving legacy system modernization, shared services, interoperability, cloud adoption, data governance, or phased capability delivery.
- Experience operating in regulated AWS environments, including FedRAMP, NIST 800-53, FIPS, audit logging, and AWS GovCloud where applicable.
